Dundee made two changes with Paul McGowan and Jason Cummings starting in place of Leigh Griffiths and Max Anderson. 

I missed the game but going by reports and what i have seen highlights, they seemed to be well off the pace. St Johnstone could have scored at least twice before they did on 31 minutes when Kane shot home after a fast break. Eight minutes later and it was 2-0 when Kane scored from a couple yards. 

Another poor goal to lose and Dundee offered very little in a poor half for the dark blues.

Second half and within a minute it was 3-0 when May scored with a fine finish across the keeper. The game was was over and a few Dundee fans headed for the exit gates.

Ryan Sweeney headed home on 74 minutes as Dundee, so at least it's a goal for the dark blues who are struggling to find their feet.

So hopefully the International break will give the players time to sort out stuff on the training field.

Dundee 0, Rangers 1, Dens Park, cinch Premiership, 25th September 2021

Dundee Manager James McPake made one change from Wednesday night. Ryan Sweeney came in for Paul McGowan as the Dee switched to five at the back.

Dundee got off to a fast start, taking only six seconds to get their first shot in. From the kick off Paul McMullan startled Rangers by racing past three players before his shot from 18 yards was blocked. The ball was quickly returned into the penalty area but Leigh Griffiths couldn’t get any power in his header.

Then Jordan McGhee send in a header but it was straight at the Rangers keeper, Rangers did have some attacks and scored on 16 minutes when Aribo finished well when he was sent clear on goal.

Leigh Griffiths had two efforts on goal as Dundee kept attacking when they could. The striker who carring a injury came off after 39 minutes replaced by Jason Cummings.

Dundee were dangerous right from the start of the second half. Ryan Sweeney got onto the end of Paul McMullan’s free kick but sent his header straight at McLaughlin.

Max Anderson robbed Glen Kamara in midfield but with Rangers’ defence wide open he overhit the pass that should have sent Cummings clear.

Anderson hit a fine long pass for McMullan whose first touch with his chest took the last man, Goldson, out of the game. McMullan raced in on goal, rounded the keeper, but was flattened by McLaughlin’s challenge before he could roll the ball into the empty goal.

Referee Bobby Madden decided the keeper’s goal-saving foul was worth only a yellow card and McLaughlin stayed on the field to block Cummings’ penalty kick. The ball rebounded high into the air and McLaughlin was able to gather it as it came down.

Dundee kept going until the end the closest they came is when McGhee headed wide, good play from Jordan Marshall who had two great runs down the wing.

I was not over impressed by Rangers and Dundee should have got a draw and they played well.

Dundee 0, St Johnstone 2, Dens Park, League Cup 1/4 Final, 22nd September 2021

Dundee made one change  Liam Fontaine keeping his place after replacing Ryan Sweeney during the Derby on Sunday.

Dundee started well and early on Clarke had to tip the ball over the bar after a shot was deflected from a corner and it was heading for the net. 

Adam Legzdins tipped over a 25 yarder from David Wotherspoon before the Dee almost scored from a fast break. Leigh Griffiths’ cross was met by Jordan McGhee’s diving header but the ball flew straight at Clark and the keeper parried. Either side and it would have been a goal.

Then Leigh Griffiths went close with a snap shot which just went past the post. Cammy Kerr came close just on half time when his effort was well saved by Zander Clarke.

Dundee flew at Saints from the start of the second half. Anderson’s burst through the middle was stopped by a cynical foul. Griffiths’ shot from the resulting free kick was parried by Clark into the path of Paul  McMullan but the winger shot against the keeper’s body.

But as in recent weeks Dundee paid the price when Saints took the lead when Rooney scored from close range, it changed the game a bit and Dundee pushed forward in search of a goal. 

With six minutes to go Saints scored again when Crawford fired home from 15 yards to end Dundee's hopes of a semi final place.

They played well enough on the night, but failed to take their chances and paid the penalty.

Dundee United 1, Dundee 0, Tannadice, cinch Premiership, 19th September 2021

Dundee boss James McPake made two changes from the team that drew with Livingston. Paul McGowan and Paul McMullan started, replacing Luke McCowan and Alex Jakubiak, who were on the bench.

Dundee started well and Leigh Griffiths was unlucky to see his header go just wide after a superb cross from Jordan Marshall. Soon after the same pair combined again this time Leigh Griffith's shot was well saved by the United keeper. 

Ten minutes from half time and Ryan Sweeney was replaced by Liam Fontaine, Ryan had not recovered from a injury picked up earlier. Dundee keeper Adam Legzdins made a great save to deny Pawlett pushing his shot onto the post. 

Second half and the game became pretty scrappy, but Shaun Byrne had a great chance but his shot was saved by the United keeper , the ball fell to Griffiths but the ball would not come down in time and his effort went over the bar. 

Alex Jakubiak came on for Max Anderson and Jason Cummings replaced Paul McGowan as Dundee knew that this was a game they could win and refused to settle for a point.

But it was United who  grabbed the vital goal when Harkes shot home from the edge of the box, Dundee pushed forward to try and level the game and came close twice in the final minutes, first  Sheridan was about to shoot but a good tackle denied the big striker. Then Jordan Marshall has a shot which was blocked on the line.

Dundee  made four changes from the team that played Motherwell. Jordan Marshall, Ryan Sweeney and Alex Jakubiak returned to the starting eleven, and Leigh Griffiths made his debut, second time around. Jason Cummings and Liam Fontaine moved onto the bench, while Charlie Adam and Paul McMullan were injured. 

Dundee started well and McGhee had a early chance but his cross was too close to the keeper, then McCowan sent Max Anderson clear but his shot was well saved by the Livi keeper. 

Luke McCowan had a 20 yard shot deflected over the bar as Dundee pushed for the opener. Leigh Griffiths then missed with a header, again the Livi keeper saved well when he pushed a Ryan Sweeney header on to the bar. 

Second half and the game became a bit flat, Cammy Kerr had a effort but he sent it over the bar. McCowan and Griffiths had half chances as the game got worse with too many stray balls as both teams struggled in the last twenty minutes.

Dundee made made changes Jason Cummings and Declan McDaid replaced Alex Jakubiak and Luke McCowan. 

So it ended a draw which Dundee will look at two points dropped, we need to start winning our home games and hopefully get our first league win at Tannadice next Sunday.

Leigh Griffiths Signs For The Dee................

 

Dundee have signed Leigh Griffiths on a season loan from Celtic, it should prove a very good deal for the club. Leigh will wear No 29 this season.

 This was the 34th game l have seen between Dundee and Motherwell at Fir Park, with Dundee wining 13 games, losing 11 and 10 draws. 

Motherwell 1 Dundee 0, Fir Park, cinch Premiership, 28-August-21

Dundee made one change for the game at Motherwell,  Cammy Kerr replaced the injured Christie Elliott. The dark blues backed by a good support started well and Max Anderson had a good effort blocked.

Next chance and Dundee nearly took the lead when a curling shot from Paul McMullen came off the bar and bounced down on the line and the well defence managed to clear. 

Just before the 30 minute mark Dundee suffered a blow when Charlie Adam had to be replaced by Paul McGowan. The midfielder seemed to be limping.

Motherwell came into the game and it took a good block from Cammy Kerr to deny Watt, but a minute later the same player glanced a header towards the goal and it went in close to the post. 

A poor goal to lose and after having so much of the ball it was hard to take.

Second half  and Dundee had a few chance but Liam Fontaine and Jason Cumming failed to really test the Motherwell keeper. 

After 60 minutes Dundee sent on Cillian Sheridan in the place of Shaun Byrne. It looked a bold move, but the holding midfielder was hardly missed against a home side that was sitting so deep.

A lovely quick turn and pass by Max Anderson allowed Jason Cummings to spin past his marker and shoot from the edge of the penalty area, but Sean Kelly saved.

With 10 minutes to go Motherwell were reduced to 10 men when Carrol was sent off for a poor tackle on Max Anderson. Dundee pushed forward but failed to get the vital goal to earn  a point. 

Time ran out and although they were the better team over the 90 minutes,  they did not do enough to merit a win.

Dundee 2, Hibernian 2, Dens Park, cinch Premiership, 22nd August 2021

Dundee made only one change from the team that beat Motherwell last week. Max Anderson came into the midfield, with Jordan McGhee moving to left back to replace the suspended Jordan Marshall.

Dundee started very brightly with Adams testing the Hibs keeper a 20 yard pile driver, they looked in the mood and took the lead on 11 minutes, when good play on the wing and ball was played into the boxit fell kindly to Jason Cummings who adjudged his feet well to pass the ball into the net. 

Soon after and McMullen tested the keeper with a curling shot which was on target. Referee Mr Muir annoyed the home fans when he failed to play the advantage when McGinn fouled Adam. Luke McCowan had the chance to send Cummings clear, but the referee pulled play back to book McGinn.

The referee was even less popular with the Dees three minutes later when he awarded Hibs a highly dubious penalty. Jamie Murphy got the wrong side of Christie Elliott. There was contact, but outside the penalty area, and Murphy landed well inside. Mr Muir pointed to the spot and Boyle scored, six minutes from half time.

A corner in injury time almost gave the Dee the half time lead they would have deserved but Macey made another fine save to keep out Lee Ashcroft’s powerful far post header.

Dundee again started well in the second half but after around 10 minutes in Hibs took control and took the lead when Porteous shot was deflected passed Legzdins.

Dundee made changes when  Paul McGowan replaced Charlie Adam midway through the second half, and Declan McDaid came on for Max Anderson. Just before this Legzdins made a great save to deny Murphy when it looked like a certain goal.

After 83 minutes the Dee took a throw quickly on the left. Paul McMullan floated a lovely cross over the heads of the central defenders for Paul McGowan  to run in and nod home the equaliser from six yards. 

Both teams had chances near the end but a draw seemed fair in the end.At least Dundee are playing attacking football at home.

Dundee 1, Motherwell 0. Dens Park, Premier Sports Cup, 14th August 2021

Dundee manager James McPake made three changes to the side that lost at Celtic last week,  Liam Fontaine, Jason Cummings and Luke McCowan, making his first start, came in for Ryan Sweeney, Cillian Sheridan and Paul McGowan.

Dundee started te game well and Jason Cummings had a good effort saved by the Motherwell keeper, Elliot had a decent effort saved as Dundee failed to score from their corner.

Close to half time and Motherwell should have taken the lead when  Lee Ashcroft was tackled by Shields as he was about to pass. The ball broke to Lawless and Motherwell had two attackers against Liam Fontaine, the only covering defender. Lawless set up Shields and he smashed his shot against the crossbar from 12 yards.

Second half and Dundee came out in a all attack mode which pushed the well defence back. They forced a few corners as Dundee pushed the vital opening goal. 

After that the Dee settled back into aggressive attack forcing Well into deep and desperate defence. Kelly again saved impressively from Charlie Adam’s low, rasping 30 yard shot.

Only a minute later Dundee frustratingly had a goal disallowed. McMullan’s energetic pressing forced Grimshaw to lose possession as he tried to come out of defence. Luke McCowan took over and jinked inside. He might have shot, but chose to pass to Cummings who netted from six yards, only to be flagged for offside.

Dundee came close when McMullen miskicked in the box as they forced corner after corner. but with twelve minutes to go Dundee finally scored McMullan’s corner from the left was straightforward. He dropped it into the danger area and let everyone fight it out. Lee Ashcroft wanted it most, using his strength to outmuscle the Motherwell defenders as he climbed to power home his header from eight yards.

Dens Park was now rocking as Dundee were going for the second killer goal, they came close a few time but they found well keeper Kelly in fine form.

Dundee ran down the clock to see the game out, a well deserved win for the Dark Blues which puts them in to the 1/4 Final stages of the Premier Sports Cup.

Dundee lost 6-0 to Celtic at Parkhead last Sunday in the league, going by reports it could have been more than just six. Dundee gave away some poor goals. 

Hopefully they can bounce back next week when they play Motherwell at Dens in the League Cup for a place in the 1/4 Finals stage.

Dundee 2, St Mirren 2, Dens Park, cinch Premiership, 31st July 2021

Dundee kicked of the new league season with a home game against St Mirren at Dens Park. The Dark Blues made three changes from last week’s defeat of Forfar. Jordan Marshall, Jordan McGhee and Paul McGowan returned to the starting line-up with Corey Panter and Jason Cummings moving onto the bench and Liam Fontaine missing out. 

Dundee's first effort on goal was a shot from Paul McGowan which went over the bar in the first minute. St Mirren took the lead on four minutes a long ball from their keeper was headed into the path of Brophy whose shot beat the diving Adam Legzdins in the Dundee goal.  

Soon after Danny Mullen had to go off injured after landing badly after a challenge for the ball. Jason Cummings came on to replace the striker. Cummings was unlucky with a shot which the St Mirren keeper had to push his shot round the post as Dundee attacked at every opportunity.

Dundee had to make another change after Christie Elliott limped off and was replaced by Ryan Sweeney who went into central defence with Jordan McGhee moving to right back.

After forcing a few corners Dundee levelled the game right on half-time. A McMullan corner to the back post was inadvertently headed into his own goal by Shaughness, under pressure from Charlie Adam.

The second half began just as badly for the Dee as the first, but the circumstances were very different. Jason Cummings was back defending at a St Mirren corner, and was judged by referee Craig Napier to have brought Jay Henderson down illegally.

It looked a dubious decision and the Dee striker was furious with the award. After a lengthy delay  McGrath scored from the spot.

Dundee responded strongly and took only five minutes to equalise with a superb move. Max Anderson played a great ball down the left which was perfectly weighted for Jordan Marshall. The full back whipped in a first time low cross on the run and Jason Cummings swept home the goal from 12 yards.

Cillian Sheridan had replaced Fin Robertson after the St Mirren penalty and he set up Cummings to run in from the right, only to finish with a weak shot.

The Dark Blues were starting to build some momentum when the game swung decisively in St Mirren’s favour with a red card for Max Anderson. Brophy broke from a Dundee corner, and Anderson scythed him down from behind midway inside the Buddies’ half. 

Dundee had to hang on for the last 25 minutes or so and they did this to earn a fine 2-2 draw, things went against them today but the team looked up for the fight. Best squad we have had for a few years, they all want to play for the club.

Next up is a visit to Parkhead to face struggling Celtic.

Premier Sports Cup Second Round Draw

Dundee will play Motherwell at Dens Park in the second round of the Premier Sports Cup. The game will be played on the week end  of 14/15 August.

Dundee had  to make changes to the team due to a positive Covid 19 test. Christie Elliott, Corey Panter, Fin Robertson, Max Anderson, Jason Cummings and Danny Mullen all started, replacing Cammy Kerr, Jordan Marshall, Shaun Byrne, Jordan McGhee, Paul McGowan and Alex Jakubiak.

Dundee had a few early chances before Charlie Adam scored with ease at the back post after Jason Cummings cross had found him.

It was no surprise when Dundee scored again shortly after the half hour mark. Declan McDaid’s corner from the left reached Jason Cummings, who set up Corey Panter to smash home his first goal for the Dee in his first game.

Soon after Charlie Adam was replaced by Paul McGowan due to injury, Dundee made it 3-0 when Christie Elliott scored after good play from Cummings and McDaid.

Second half and Forfar Athletic pulled one back when McCluskey scored. But on 71 minutes it was 4-1 after  McMullen was fouled in the box . Jason Cummings scored from the spot with ease. . Soon after Anderson scored Forfar's second goal with a simple tap in.

But Jason Cummings headed home with two minutes to go to complete the scoring.

Montrose 0, Dundee 2, Links Park, Premier Sports Cup, 21st July 2021

Dundee started with the team which played Brora Rangers last week. New keeper Ian Lawlor is on the bench. The first 20 minutes not much happened only a Fontaine header which was well over.

Dundee had plenty of the ball but failed to create any clear cut chances. Both Fontaine and Ashcroft hit the bar with headers as the half came to a close. 

Dundee made two changes at half time when Christie Elliott and Jason Cummings came on for Cammy Kerr and Alex Jakubiak. Montrose struggled to create anything as well and only a McMullen effort which went wide gave Dundee hope of a break through.

Dundee made another two changes when Max Anderson and Luke McCowan replaced Charlie Adam and Paul McGowan, and the youthful energy of the substitutes allowed the Dee to take total control and finish off the Gable Endies.

Six minutes later and it payed off McCowan played in Marshall who was fouled in the box, Jason Cummings scored with ease from the spot. 

Two minutes later Cummings turned a McMullan cross into the path of McGhee, allowing him to shoot from 18 yards. Fleming saved well, but Luke McCowan  followed up to blast in his first goal for the Dark Blues.

Dundee seen the game out without any more goals and it was good to get another win, clean sheet and it puts Dundee top of the table with one game to go.
