Aberdeen Next Up

Dundee will host Aberdeen in the Second Round of the Betfred Cup, after the draw was made at Dens Park. The game will be played on either 17th or 18th of August.

Not the best of draws, but all the pressure will be on Aberdeen. Dundee can just have a go at them and maybe a upset will be on the cards.

Dundee 1, Inverness CT 0, Dens Park, Betfred Cup, 28-July-19

Dundee beat Inverness CT 1-0 at Dens Park to win the Group and for Inverness is was a exit for them in the Betfred Cup. I missed the game due to work, but just watched it on BT Sports. 

Dundee Manager gave new striker Danny Johnson a starting place, with Jordan McGhee coming back into the side. Declan McDaid and Josh Mulligan  were back on the bench.

Dundee started well and the link up play was good. Their passing was much better and they seemed to be up for it. Inverness struggled to get going in the early stages. Danny Johnson should have scored when the ball fell nicely in the box, but the new striker's effort flew wide of the goal. Jack Hamilton made a good save after the ball was deflected towards the bottom corner of the goal. 

Danny Johnson made up for his early miss when he got a powerful shot on target to give Dundee the lead. The Caley keeper should have done better, and really should have saved it. Dundee finished the half much the better side. 

Second half and it was mainly one way traffic with Dundee missing a few chance to finish the game. Paul McGowan was unlucky after a mazy run. Inverness seemed to be out of ideas and really Dundee were never in any danger. James McPake  send on Declan McDaid and Josh Todd for Danny Johnson and Paul McGowan in the later stages.

So a good win for Dundee who looked much better, and it was good that East Fife got through to the second round with our City rivals missing out.

Next game is at Dunfermline which will be a test, a good support should travel and I hope we can start the league with a positive result.

On this day in 1984 Dundee beat SV Elvesberg 3-1 on their tour of West Germany. The goals were scored by Albert Kidd (2), and Ray Stephen I remember the game well it was my second game of that tour.

Danny Johnson

Dundee have signed Motherwell striker Danny Johnson on a two year deal. Danny scored 8 goals for the well last season. He joined the Fir park club in 2018 after scoring a lot of goals for Gateshead.

He has played a lot of football in England and what l have seen he will do well for the dark blues this season.

Dundee 0, Peterhead 0, (Dundee won 4-2 on pens) Dens Park, Betfred Cup, 20-July-19

Dundee and Peterhead drew 0-0 at Dens Park, a game which was my first of the season. 

Manager James McPake made three changes Josh Meekings and Declan McDaid returned to the side, and Josh Mulligan startred his first game for the club. Jordan McGhee and Craig Curran were on the bench and Jamie Ness was unavailable due to injury. 

Dundee got off to a slow start and struggled to get the ball forward quick enough. Derek Lyle came close for the visitors and Jack Hamilton had to push a effort over the bar as Peterhead were the better side in the first half. 

Second half was slightly better but Dundee never really make the Peterhead keeper make any saves, with only a Byrne and Nelson efforts which were both just wide of the target.

Jack Hamilton made a good save to deny Peterhead all three points near the end. The game went to Penalties again Dundee won the extra point winning 4-2. Dundee went first with McDaid's effort saved by the keeper, Gibson scored, Curran scored, Leith put his over the bar, Cunningham and Nelson scored, Smith scored his. Stevenson hit the bar with his leaving McGowan to score to win it 

for the Dens men.

It might prove to be a vital point for the dark blues and one that might make them get through to the next stage of the Betfred Cup. Myself I though the whole team struggled mainly and hopefully they will be better the next time I see them at East End Park a week on Friday. The squad still looks a bit weak and hopefully James McPake can get the players which we need.

Gordon Strachan

Dundee have appointed Gordon Strachan as Technical Director. Gordon will bring a wealth of experience to the club having played and managed at the highest level.

In his role at Dundee, he will focus on helping the club develop the best young players that we can while working closely with Head of Academy Stephen Wright and the other coaches in the Academy set up.

Gordon started his career with Dundee and made his debut in 1973 for the club. He went on to played for Aberdeen, Manchester United, Leeds United, Coventry City as well as representing his country on 50 occasions. 

He moved into management in 1996 with Coventry and then was in charge at Southampton, Celtic, Middlesbrough before taking over in charge of the national team. 

His knowledge, experience and contacts in the game will be a huge asset to the Academy structure at the club. 

This is a big step forward for the club, and one I hope it is successful. 

Cove Rangers 0, Dundee 0, Balmoral Stadium, Betfred Cup, 17-July-19

Dundee drew 0-0 at Cove Rangers last night, but won the Penalty shoot-out 3-2 to gain the extra point. Manager James McPake made three changes Jordon Forster came in for his debut, Finlay Robertson and Craig Curran started instead of Declan McDaid and Josh Todd who were on the bench. Josh Meekings was rested after coming back from a long injury, and saves him playing on a plastic pitch twice in four days. 

Going by reports the game started slowly and it took until the 20th minute before the dark blues got a effort on the goal. A Cammy Kerr shot which just went wide, Jamie Ness was next but his shot was too straight at the keeper. Cove had a couple of efforts but both were saved well by Jack Hamilton, then Paul McGowan was unlucky to see his header hit the post with the keeper beaten, Craig Curran missed the rebound. Second half and Dundee started brightly when Andrew Nelson's header was just over the bar, 10 minutes into the half and Josh Todd and Declan McDaid replaced Finlay Robertson and Craig Curran.

Both teams had changes with Nelson coming very close late on, so on to Penalty's to decide who got the bonus point. Cove went first: Martin Scott scored, Jordan McGhee scored 1-1, next four kicks were missed by Jamie Masson (over the bar), Jordon Forster (over the bar), Harry Milne (over the bar), Andrew Nelson (keeper saved), Daniel Park and Declan McDaid both scored. Daniel Higgins missed (over the bar) to leave Paul McGowan to win it for Dundee which he did.

Raith Rovers 0, Dundee 3, Starks Park, Betfred Cup, 13-July-19

Dundee started their first game in the BetFred Cup with a 3-0 win at Raith Rovers on Saturday. They started the game well and Andrew Nelson scored with a well taken goal after just 14 minutes. After 29 minutes it was 2-0 after McDaid was fouled in the box. Andrew Nelson blasted the ball home with ease to put Dundee in full control.

Second half going by reports Dundee were in control, although Rovers did play a bit better, but a third goal sealed the win for the dark blues. A neat lay-off by Byrne to play in Craig Curran to get his first goal for the club. 

My brother told me they were a lot more positive going forward, and he said the team played well.  Early days yet so l won't get carried away. Next up is the trip to Cove Rangers who have our ex boss Paul Hartley in charge.

Dundee 1, Blackpool 0, Dens Park, Friendly, 09-July-19

Dundee beat Blackpool 1-0 in their last pre-season game at Dens Park. A goal from Andrew Nelson just before half-time separated the sides. 

It was a mistake from the Seasiders keeper when he kicked the ball off Nelson and ball rolled into the empty net. Going by reports Dundee played some neat football in the first half. Both teams made lots of changes during the game.

Dundee's New Kits....................

I think I will need to see them in the flesh before I make my mind up on them. The home one I don't like the badge. It does not look right for me, my view is it's either the badge they have used lately or the other one. I might change my mind when I see it!  

The away is better looking but not sure of the collar on how it buttons up. Other wise it's nice. For me the badge looks better than the home top.

News From Dens........................

Dundee lost 2-1 in a closed door friendly with Scunthorpe. The Irons took a early lead, but Paul McGowan levelled with a great strike from 20 yards. Later on Scunthorpe took the lead again. It was a good test and work out for the players. ExDees Andy Dales and James Horsfield both played for Scunthorpe.

I never seen the Dunfermline fixture being changed I was looking forward to the day out in Dunfermline! Instead l will rushing to get to the game after work. I will also need to get some time off as I finish at 6pm.

 I was planning to go to Ayr but now will need a holiday to go. Likely will miss the Tannadice game now as transport is not great after 6pm in fife after my work. The only game I'm off for on the Friday is the Morton game , so I will be able to go now. 

Likely the next Derby will be Friday as well so will need a early finish at work to be able to go. It's the kick -off time of 7:05 makes it hard for me to attend I'm sure their is a lot of other Fans in the same boat!

Dundee drew 0-0 with English side Nottingham Forest. Going by reports it was a even game, it would have been a good work out for the squad with 19 players being used by Manager James McPake. It was good to see a few Dundee Fans making the trip across to Spain, a three week holiday this coming November ended my interest on going I did check the flights details ect.

Dens Update.....................

Dundee will play Nottingham Forest tomorrow night, the game will be at the Pinatar Arena in Spain. The game will  kick-off  at17:30 local time.

Dundee beat Brechin City 2-1 at Glebe Park on Saturday, Declan McDaid got his first goal for the club. Youngster Lyall Cameron got the winner in the second half, after Brechin's trialist had levelled the game. A total of 22 players were used so a decent work out for the players.

Jordan Forster

Dundee have signed Jordon Forster on a two year deal with the club, with an option of a further year. Centre half Jordon progressed through the Hibernian youth ranks and went on play 79 times for the Easter Road club. 

He moved down south to join Cheltenham Town in 2017. A regular with the League Two side last season, he played 35 times. 

Jordon will join the squad as they head to Spain for a pre-season training camp next week.

Kerr Waddell has left the club following the expiry of his contract in the summer. After progressing through the Dundee youth academy.

Kerr made 22 appearances for the club. He scored some vital goals. Last season he made 28 appearances for Morton last season.

Jamie Ness

Dundee have signed Jamie Ness on a two year deal with the club with an option of a further year. 

Midfielder Jamie returns to Scotland after seven seasons south of the border.

A product of the Rangers youth academy, Jamie progressed to the first team where he made 18 appearances before a move to Stoke City in the English Premier League.

During his time with Stoke he had loan spells with Leyton Orient and Crewe Alexandra and in 2015 moved to Scunthorpe United. After two season with Scunthorpe he moved to Plymouth Argyle where he was a regular for two seasons. 

Jamie will wear number 4 this season.
